LOOKING FOR AN EXCITING BSA SCOUT TROOP FOR YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER?
Troop 848 is one of the oldest and largest BSA Scout troop for boys in the Clear Lake area. We now have a very active and growing sister Troop 849 for girls as well. It already is one of the largest girl troop in the greater Clear Lake area. The girl troop meets and camps separately from the boy troop, but do most of the same campout activities together. They also share the extensive equipment and committee experience that Troop 848 has accumulated over 54 years.
Come check us out and see why we are so popular.
We meet at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church every Tuesday 7:00pm-8:30 pm.

BSA “Annual Health and Medical Record” Form. Health forms are required for each Scout and participating adult and can be downloaded at https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_ABC.pdf. There are three parts on the BSA Health form. Part A & Part B need to be completed in their entirety and submitted along with a copy of the scout's medical insurance card (both sides). Part C of the medical form requires a physician's exam and is only required for those attending summer, winter, or high adventure camps. Always keep the originals in a safe place and give the troop copies.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS!
- Part A - A parent and scout must sign in the box
- Part A - At least one adult must be listed in Adults Authorized to Take Youth to and From Events
- Part B2 - In the middle of the page mark if non-prescription medication is authorized and a parent must sign
- Part B2 - Enter all immunization dates on the form - do not attach a copy of a record from the doctor's office. Also ensure that a tetanus vaccine was received within 10 years.
- Include a copy front and back of your insurance card
Scouting BSA Uniform (Class A). We require the full Scouting BSA Uniform – tan shirt, green pants/shorts, green socks and scout belt. We do not require neckerchiefs or hats. All items are available online or at the Scout Shop in Houston (or the troop has some used uniforms available). The troops will provide the green shoulder straps and the unit numbers (848 or 849).
Troop T-shirt (Class B). Both troops have troop specific t-shirts available for purchase for $15 to wear when the Class A uniform is not required.
Scouting Handbook. Every scout needs to purchase a handbook to track requirements. There are boy and girl versions available with identical content but with girls or boys in the photos.
Fees. Our annual fee covers nearly all the cost for your child’s scouting experience with the troop. It includes campsite reservations, campout activity costs for most months, equipment (tents, stoves, climbing gear, canoes, etc.), ammunition for shooting sports, advancement patches, and much more. The only thing not covered to go on a monthly campout is the food their patrol prepares on the campout (typically $15). There is usually one campout a year that has a supplemental expense such as ziplining or caving. Of course, extended camps (summer camp, winter camp, and high adventure camps) are extra if your scout chooses to participate. Registration fees are as follows:
- BSA annual registration fee: $86 for scouts and $66 for adult volunteers (includes cost of background check). This fee is paid annually directly to Scouts BSA. There also is a one time $25 BSA fee for new members (non webelos).
- Troop 848/849 annual fee: $120 for scouts and no charge for adults. The fee is prorated for the number of months left in the calendar year.
- The troop accepts payments by
- Zelle to treasurer@bsatroop848.org or treasurer@bsatroop849.org, include name and 'membership 848' or 'membership 849'
- check made out to Troop 848 or Troop 849
- financial assistance for those in need. Contact the Committee Chair on the Contact Us tab.
- The troop also has an optional annual fundraiser – mulch sales – where 100% of the profit goes into the “scout account” of the scout who sold and delivered that mulch. Money in a scout account can be used for any scout-related expense except the monthly campout food. The money is commonly used for summer camp fee, annual registration fees, high adventure camps, Eagle Scout project, etc. The average profit earned by participating scouts is around $400/yr – less for scouts just starting out and more for scouts who expand their customer base over the years. We always have at least a few scouts earn over $1000 to put into their scout account each year. Scouts cannot take the money with them when they leave the troop.
